Daly Hall 205, ext. 7157

Students majoring in American studies are strongly encouraged to also take courses in European history. Majors who wish to earn a secondary teaching certificate in social studies should inform the American Studies Director and the Education Department as early as possible in their college careers to assure proper scheduling.

Freshman-Sophomore Courses

Required: AMS 201, 202 (ENG 211, 212); HIS 201, 202

Major Requirements: AMS 300, AMS 491 (must be taken in the senior year), and six other major courses from among those listed under the American Studies major in the College Catalog.

Minor Requirements: The American Studies program does not offer a minor.

Senior Capstone Experience: The American Studies Senior Capstone Experience is an intensive research project guided by a faculty adviser on a topic of the student's choice. Students complete the Capstone while enrolled in the 4-credit Senior Capstone Experience (SCE) course in the spring of their senior year. The Capstone receives a mark of Pass, Fail, or Honors. Double majors are encouraged to develop Capstones that integrate their majors. Since this requires consultation and cooperation between departments and faculty advisers, double majors should discuss the possibility of an integrated Capstone in their junior year.
