Art
- Course Catalog Description
Donald McColl, Chair
Daly Hall 217, ext. 7874
The major is designed to create an integrated program of study, combining the history and creation of art. A student has some latitude in emphasizing one aspect over the other, but, of course, the requirements must be met. The Constance Stuart Larrabee Arts Center is available for studio courses.
Students studying art at an advanced level have a number of opportunities, in both art history and studio art, for independent study in their special interest. It should be made clear that the College has neither the facilities, staff, nor resources for the full array of courses in the creative arts and crafts that one might find in an art school. The program is intended for the student who seeks a liberal arts education.
Freshman-Sophomore Courses
Recommended: ART 200, ART 251. Students hoping to take the maximum offerings in studio art should take ART 261 by the end of the sophomore year.
Major Requirements: ART ART 251, and no fewer than three advanced courses in the history of art. Students who wish to emphasize studio art are further required to take ART and ART 271. A total of nine courses is required to complete the major.
Minor Requirements: The following courses are required for an art minor: ART 200, and three 300 level courses.
Senior Capstone Experience: A comprehensive examination will be given to those who have stressed studio work. The written section on art history is a one-day, three-hour examination and, in lieu of a second-day exam, a student project will be allowed with permission of the department (to be decided at least one term in advance). Students who have stressed art history will have two three-hour examinations: one exam of a general nature, and one testing specific fields.
