Major Requirements and Recommendations

Required: BIO 111, 112, BIO 206, BIO 305, and five other upper-level biology courses chosen from particular course areas. Additional required courses include CHE 111, 112, CHE 201, 202, and MAT 201. All majors are also required to complete the Biology Seminar (BIO 000) in each semester of their senior year. Recommended: PHY 111, 112, as well as a course in statistics.

Minor Requirements: The course requirements for the biology minor include BIO 111,112 and five upper-level biology courses. By petition of the Department of Biology, an appropriate course in chemistry, psychology, or environmental studies may be substituted for one of the required advanced biology classes. Students planning on using the biology minor as a basis for further studies in the biological sciences or for employment should seriously consider taking CHE 111, 112. All students should note that CHE 111, 112 is a prerequisite for some upper-level biology courses.

Students planning to have a career in secondary education, attend medical school or graduate school, or enter the 3:2 Nursing Program or the 3:4 Pharmacy Program, and students who have other special interests should consult the Department Chair or appropriate program adviser in the first year so that additional course requirements can be satisfied.

Required: BIO 111, 112, BIO 205, BIO 305, BIO 409, and three other upper-level biology courses chosen from particular course areas as outlined in the College Catalog plus CHE 111, 112, CHE 201, 202, CHE 301, CHE 303; and MAT 202. Biology majors with a concentration in biochemistry must complete BIO 000 in each semester of their senior year. The senior thesis must be based on research in the field of biochemistry.

Recommended: PHY 111, 112.

Senior Capstone Experience: The Senior Capstone Experience for a biology major may be satisfied either by completing an independent laboratory or field research project or by writing an in-depth research paper.
