Freshman-Sophomore Courses
Required: MUS 131, 132 and MUS 203, 204. Advanced standing in music theory may be granted by departmental examination. See the Chair regarding particulars. The prospective music major should also arrange to study applied music and participate in performance groups.
Major Requirements and Recommendations
Required: MUS 131, 132; MUS 203, 204; MUS 231, 232; MUS 233; two semester music courses from those numbered 303, 304, 305, 306, 307, 308, 309, 310, 311, 312; plus two years of applied music. All majors are required to study two years of piano if the major area of performance is another instrument or voice. All majors must participate in those performance ensembles for which they qualify. Recommended: MUS 330, 331, and 430. All students should take two additional years of applied music study. If a student plans to pursue graduate work in music, the department strongly recommends two years of German or French language study, in that order of preference.
Minor Requirements: Seven courses are required for a minor in music. Required courses are MUS 131, 132, 203, and 204. Three additional courses are to be selected from the following: MUS 231, 232, 303, 304, 305, 306, 307, 308, 309, 310, 311, 312, 330, 331, and/or 233 and 430. Up to four semesters of applied music study may also be counted toward the minor. Each minor will also participate in those ensembles for which he or she is qualified.
Senior Capstone Experience: The Senior Capstone Experience in music may be fulfilled by writing an extensive research paper or an extended composition; by presenting a research paper in conjunction with a lecture recital; or by performing a solo recital.
